Columns and Display ALpha addon problem

I am trying to use the display_alpha and columns addins together. Either one works perfectly on their own. When I combine them, the alpha separated listing formats poorly. The alpha headers are not spaced properly. Is there a way to fix this? It would be nice to have the list flow down one column and then wrap over to the next column instead of wrapping across the columns with each alpha break in the list.

I can send a screen capture of the problem if that helps.
