Combination Multisite Headway Themes very slow

    We are running an multi-site installation with about 400 websites in it. About 95% are using the theme ‘Headway Themes’. The average load-time of one of those websites is 6 seconds, and that is way to much. We have been testing out some things. When we de-active Headway and activate as an example ‘Twenty Sixteen’, the average load-time is 1.7 seconds. That makes me think that the problem is within Headway Themes. See te image below:

    But that is not the completely ‘truth’. When using an single-site installation in combination with Headway Themes the load-time is about 1 second average, which is good.

    We have already been testing to deactivate all of the plug-ins in our multisite set-up, but then also the load-time average is about 5 till 6 seconds.

    Does anyone have an idea?

    Multisite networks share the themes among the network, so they will slow things down vs a single site. How many separate themes (including child themes) are you trying to run in the network.

    Also, is your network running in shared hosting or a VPS/more resources server?

    We are using 1 theme in our network, but this theme (framework) is used by 400+ websites. We are using an VPS server.

    Hi Driekes!

    Theme frameworks are generally slower. We run ithemes Builder on most of our sites. The fact that it runs a little slower is a trade-off for the rapid development that it offers. Headway offers a number of posts about how to optimize that you might want to take a look at.

    Or, are you posting because you are noticing that something is markedly slower than it USED to be? That might be a different issue. Potentially, Headway be having issues with the jQuery update in wp version 4.5. Have you looked at your error logs?
