• In relation to the question about addons AND variations…

Looking for a way to have products that when bought together, can attract a discount (almost like an automatic coupon perhaps, but not excluding the ability to enter a coupon code during checkout)

    Say…

    widget 1 sells for £10
    widget 2 sells for £5
    widget 3 sells for £5

Is there any way that can be done?

but if widget 2 and/or widget 3 is bought with widget 1, the respective price of the additional product is reduced

This helps in the case where stock levels of one product vary to others, where variations won’t work (imagine if the above was set up such that widget1+2 and widget1+3 and widget1+2+3 were set up as variations on widget1, and there were only 2 widget1’s in stock, you couldn’t have variation stock levels handle this instance without the potential to under-supply).
