• Hello, love Brick yard. Have a few questions and one problem.

?1) The comment form that enables people to post a comment is great, however, I would like to edit it for my specific needs. I’d like to change the fields a bit. How can I do it and where do I find the text code?

?2) I’m using WP’s Contact form and unfortunately I can only display the text (code) on the Visual. Is this a Theme issue? I doubt it in that the same thing is happening on my other WP site and on that domain I use Childishly Simple as the theme. Any help you can give?

?3) I do have 2 columns and the right one is blank. I’d like to put a photo or two there and possibly a time and date block. How do I do these things?

Problem: I’d like to use the Brick background and can’t find it. What to do?

    Thank you,

    Robert

    Dear Robert,

1.) You can edit the comment form in the “comments.php” theme file. For getting more information about the comment_form function, you can visit the following Codex page.
Instead of editing the original “comments.php”, I can recommend you to create a child theme.

2.) If you would like to insert a contact form shortcode into a widget area (probably using a Text widget), you will need to add the following code just before the closing ?> tag in “functions.php”:
    add_filter( 'widget_text', 'do_shortcode');

By default, all themes hosted at www.ads-software.com are allowed to use shortcodes only within the page/post content (in Visual Editor), not in the widget areas or anywhere else.

3.) To put a photo into your right sidebar, I can recommend you to install the following plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/black-studio-tinymce-widget/. It allows you to work with the Visual Editor also within the widget areas. For inserting a date block, you also will need to search for an appropriate plugin as this is not a core WordPress feature.

If you would like to use the background image which you can see in the theme screenshot, you can download it here: https://unsplash.com/post/71804718364/download-by-martin-wessely.

I hope that my answers will be helpful for you.

Thanks, Tom. I’m trying to figure all this out. I’ll get it step by step.

Insofar as the background is concerned I did download the bricks unfortunately, I could not paste it. What I then did was take a screenshot of the bricks and downloaded that and yes it did post, unfortunately, I had black background in it as well (it didn’t cover the entire page. Any suggestions on that?

Tom, the contact form I have is from the JetPack app(widget?).
I think it may be a hosting issue and have run it by my host since some of my hosting info proceeds the code for the contact form. Will Brick Yard take the Jet Pack contact form?

    Thnx,
    Robert

    Dear Robert,

you also can download the background image (bricks) directly from the BrickYard Premium demo site: https://brickyard.tomastoman.cz/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/background.jpg (2000 x 1300 px). To set the background image to cover the whole screen, please use the following Custom CSS:

    body {background-size: cover;}

BrickYard theme is compatible with the JetPack plugin, so if your problems continue, please try to contact your web host provider. You also can try the Contact Form 7 plugin, which also works well with BrickYard theme.

Did do that and for a moment it worked. Check out the current problem; cycleshanty.net and let me know what you think.

    Did change the CSS to read: body {background-size: cover;}

Still cannot get the contact form, either one, WP ot Form 7. I’m trying to get my host to correct the problem (PHP) with their server.

Any way, let me know what you think.

Tom, who is a really good web host willing to help a client out when they don’t have code skills etc? I’m really thinking of making a change since I do need the contact forms and there is nothing I can do to correct the error I received when I tried to put the contact form back on after the site was updated to WP 4.0.

Do you know how to un revise WP and go back to 3.9.1?

    Dear Robert,

if both JetPack contact form and Contact Form 7 plugins are not working for you, most probably it is a web host issue. Here is a list of recommended web hosting providers for WordPress.

Here is a video tutorial how to downgrade WordPress to an earlier version. You will need to connect via FTP to your web server and manually upload the earlier version of WordPress. Before doing it, you should completely back up your website (all the files on your web server and also the MySQL database).

I hear you Tom. At this point I believe you are correct. I moved my site to DreamHost and for a whole year I had perfect harmony and compatibility. It seems as though a whole new crowd has taken it over and every time I ask for a little help I get lip service and my site fails even more. At this point my first site has no pictures on it after they “fixed” it. I do not have access to my .htaccess files. Nothing I do works.

Insofar as your theme is concerned, I again, need to access my .htaccess files to paste some code so WP stops sending out a 404. I have no access to do it.

My greatest problem is finding a web host that is managed by and operated by mature adults who have a code engineering background and take responsibility for hosting issues.

The easiest way for me to correct this problem I have is to go to another web host. My site is very basic and I can copy and paste the entire site in less time than it would take me to become a geek. Its the photos that are time consuming although less time consuming than the time needed to become a geek.

If there are any suggestions you can make please do so. I really like Brick Yard and think my problems with background are hosting problems.

    Dear Robert,

you can try to switch to the default Twenty Fourteen theme (or another default themes) and check whether you also run into the same problems with it. If so, there is some problem with your web hosting.
If you are unable to upload large pictures, it is most probably caused by a too low “upload_max_filesize” set on your web server.

Tom, on one of my sites I have Childishly Simple and on the other Brick Road. I had a contact form on the first, it vanished and I cannot re-load it. I can’t place it on Brick Road either.

Switching to 2014 isn’t going to correct my ability to access .htacces and my WP server. Nor do I have time to delete everything on 2014 so it looks like Brick Road.

I am convinced it is the web host. Too many other things unrelated to WP are happening. I have no communication with them. I need another web host. I looking and think I’ve found one offering better than shared hosting, indeed, slightly higher cost, however, some of the most complex sites are hosted with them and there are site building options. If 4.0 is as bad as numerous people on the forums say it is perhaps its time to change.

There is Weebly and a host of others I’m checking out. Bare in mind, my sites are very basic and simple. Just text and photos.

    Dear Robert,

for my projects, I always use some local web hosts (I am from the Czech Republic) so I have no personal experience with the foreign web host providers, but I have seen many websites with my themes hosted on Bluehost without any problems. Before you purchase a new web host, you should ensure that it meets all the WordPress minimum requirements.

Yes, unfortunately the hosts that meet the minimum requirements have strange practices. I’d really like to move away from WP in that I am finding it way to time consuming and complicated.

I’m thinking of going back to a site builder if I can gget the password protection I need.

    Any suggestions?

    Dear Robert,

if you would like to try another system than WordPress, it will be best to inquire directly its provider. Unfortunately, I specialize only in WordPress and have no extensive experience with another systems.

Tom, I just thought of something. One of the greatest problems I have with WP is not being able to use a good media widget. I’d like something with thumbnails and a slide show.

Childishly Simple does not allow that.

How about Brick Road? Can it be placed on individual pages and can each one have its own gallery of photos? I don’t want one slide show for all photos.

    Theme Author TT Themes

    (@tomastoman)

    Dear Robert,

BrickYard Premium version offers in-built slideshow feature which allows you to create unlimited number of slideshows and display them on the individual pages/posts (see the live demo).

You also can try the NextGEN Gallery plugin for managing galleries/slideshows.
