• Hi Guys, Im currently experiencing problems with the comment moderation queue.

There are several people who comment on my site who cause me a great deal of problems by trolling the site and driving discussion way off topic. Rather than ban them I have tried to put them on comment moderation. I.E I see their comments before they go live on the site.

There are other people who comment on the site who cause no problem so I want to leave them un-moderated.

As directed by the codex, I have placed the screen names, IP address and Email address of the trouble causers in the moderation key box.

However the codex page advises that “When you add a new moderation key, it’s a good idea to test its validity by checking previous comments. Simply use the link entitled Check past comments against moderation list, which is located underneath the text box containing moderation keys. This asks WordPress to check previous comments and tell you which ones would be flagged for moderation under your new set of keys.”

The first problem I have is that I do not see any such link, as described above, and am unable to check the moderation keys.

Secondly, the comments of the moderated individuals are going live on the site without me needing to approve them.

Please could someone advise on where I am going wrong or if there is a bug in the site software.

    what Codex page?

That’s not what the page says. It actually says:

Moderation keys can include Spam Words, swear words, IP addresses, and Regular Expressions.

So your keys simply do not match anything in the comment queue. This not surprising. IP addresses often vary – even when it is the same person posting. I’d suggest you have a look at Combating_Comment_Spam.

I am a little confused. Its not spam Im talking about, but a desruptive user. I have a user with the following details :

    Name : Rudolph Hess
    Email : [email protected]
    ip : 100:92:300:196

I put all these details in moderation Key List, one per line, yet he has made several comments Using the very same name, ip and email address and all have gone live to the site without requiring me to approve them.

Am I wrong in thinking his comments should be waiting in the queue ?

    1. His IP address may change.

    2. I’d recommend moderating all comments and using the Akismet plugin to handle obvious spam (as opposed to disruptive) comments.

I think you may be misunderstanding what Im trying to achieve. I do use Akismet to handle spam already and its very good at it.

I want to allow established trusted commenter’s to have comments go live instantly.

I want to hold the comments from disruptive contributors so I can either approve or trash them depending on them being on topic and not trolling the site.

I dont want to hold all comments for moderation, just ones from certain ip address, email address or screen name.

Also with regards to the the comments that went live, his IP adress never changed as I have checked.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins apart from Akismet to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
