• Hey.. so I just installed wordpress on a domain I _just_ registered, which hasn’t been used anywhere or told to anybody or anything.
Within a few hours, my default first post had three of those poker spams on it!
My question is not really about the spam itself, but rather how did they find my WordPress installation so fast?
Is there some sort of public registry of WordPress installs that every new install pings or something? These spammers very clearly have a list of all WordPress installs, and they get it updated as soon as a new one is installed.
    How?

  • You pinged when you made a post.
    Updates Services

You’re set up to automatically ping pingomatic.com for each new post. Check in Options, under Writing.
This will ping every service in the world and let every spam bot know where each live one is.

    Ah.. ha!
Maybe that should be turned off by default?
Seems like it invites spam pretty darn quick!
    ugh.

In two days I received more than 150 spammed messages.

Maybe that should be turned off by default?

According to the commons sense logic it should be off. But when you have to deal with human weakness (vanity?) then common sense never prevails ??

vain? me? i know you’re talking about me, you are aren’t you?
    omg…

i’ve deeply enjoyed a hassle free experience by selecting just a few of these options.
