Comments alongside photo

Yes, tick the box in Table IV-F7: Comten alt display and use a shortcode like:

[wppa type="album" album="#comten,0,7" ][/wppa]

Would this also be possible using the widget?
I prefer the color scheme of the widget for the comments.

You can add colors by css, classes:
