Comments being made but not showing on comment counter

Ok, people are making comments on my posts but there is a problem. If you open the individual posts up, the comments are all there. However, if you just visit my index page and look at all the posts, they show “0 comments” below the entry when it should say “2 comments”,etc. How do I fix this?
