• Hi Paul,

    I’m having a commenting issue.

Shield keeps flagging some comments as Spam even when they are from people who comment regularly and are considered trusted commenters. The message I am seeing is [* Shield plugin marked this comment as “SPAM”. Reason: Failed Bot Test (expired) *]

The GASP checkbox is there, posting count down is set to 30 seconds, trusted commenter minimum is set to 3. I also had reCAPTCHA enabled for comments, but recently turned that off to eliminate that extra step.

I’m not sure what I’m missing or not fully understanding about the failed test bot expiry message. I thought the box was always showing, and so it must be ticked in order for a comment to go through.

    Appreciate your time and assistance.

    Hi,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you’re having.

Could you confirm that you’re running the latest Shield v9.0.2 on this site, please?

The expiry timeout is set to 10 minutes by default. Are you using any custom comments form; using anything custom for your comments form?

    Thanks.

    Hi Jelena,

    Thanks for the response.

Yes, the latest version of Shield (v.9.0.2) is installed.

As for the comments, this particular site uses Tasty Pins, a recipe plugin that automatically adds a 5-star rating system so people can also rate the recipe that’s been posted when they leave a comment. I have used both this plugin and the Shield plugin for a long time, so I don’t think they are incompatible.

The commenting issue, however, is fairly new. It’s only been happening for about a month. Also, only some people are experiencing this issue. Most trusted comments come through just fine and are not flagged by Shield.

So, I’m not sure what is happening, but the error would suggest that the GASP checkbox isn’t being checked, but somehow the comment still went through.

Again, I thought the box has to be checked in order for a comment to go through.

In other words, if the box is not there because it expires after 10 minutes, then the person must reload the page anyway to be able to submit the comment, correct?

What I’m missing or not fully understanding about how it all works?

Could you show us where you got the Tasty Pins plugin so we can install it and test, please?

    Many thanks.

    Jelena,

My apologies. It’s actually the Tasty Recipes plugin that adds the 5-star rating. You can find the plugin at https://www.wptasty.com/tasty-recipes

    Thank you.

    Hi,

Firstly, my sincere apologies for such a slow reply…

We’ve just released 9.0.3. Could I ask you to upgrade and then monitor trusted users comments , please? Let us know if the problem is still there or not.

Many thanks and again, sorry for the delayed response.

    Hi Jelena,

I have been monitoring the comments. There was one on June 7th with the message [* Shield plugin marked this comment as “SPAM”. Reason: Failed Bot Test (expired) *] — but it was from a new person who did not have any previously trusted comments.
