• Very strange. Two of my blogs (so far…) have suddenly closed all comments on all posts. One of the two blogs has two posts with open comments, the two posts published yesterday. The other blog hasn’t been updated since Sep 17 and the same thing happened there.

In addition to having comments on EVERY blog post (except the two listed above) deselected on EACH blog page, there are other weird issues. Three discussion setting that I have never used, never set, and certainly did not change recently were checked today on BOTH blogs.

    (1) Users must be registered and logged in to comment
    (2) An administrator must always approve the comment
    (3) Break comments into pages with…

Strangely, neither of them had the “Automatically close comments on articles older than x days” — even though that is what seems to have happened.

Similar problems are documented here and here.

Tried deactivating EVERY plugin – no change. Tried changing to default theme – no change.

It seems I can change these manually — although I don’t know if they will eventually revert — but I have hundreds of posts.

    Any ideas???

As I posted on the other thread:

solidariti, I don’t know what you mean by an incorrect slug. This bug has never occurred for me when I post a NEW post (by whatever name). It occurs when I’m offline and, sometimes, when I haven’t updated a blog in weeks.

I am not having issues with duplicate post slugs.

rjhayton, you said that your were similar, but that would also be a hug bug to have SIMILAR post slugs cause all the comments to shut down. ????

I’m having this same problem, and I’m actually starting to toy with just using a different commenting system rather than mess with the WordPress bug. Facebook commenting may be a better route to go anyway…

tcsoul, glad to hear from others with this problem! Hoping to get SOME kind of traction and resolution.

Question: Does using another commenting system circumvent the bug? Or does the bug just extend through?

Also — if anyone reading knows — if you switch to another commenting system can you switch back easily, bringing the comments with you? I actually like the simplicity of the WP commenting system, but this bug has made is anything BUT simple. ??

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Hi esmi. As per above, I have deactivated all plugins (still happened) and switched to default theme (still happened). I also repaired the database (had nothing wrong). I have not reset the plugins folder. But I’ll try that, too.

    Thread Starter AlisonMooreSmith

    (@alisonmooresmith)

Reset did nothing. All comments closed and settings changed again today.

Is there a way to report a bug somewhere?

    (@alisonmooresmith)

BTW, I’m using version 3.0.1, not 2.9.2 as it says in the right sidebar.

Now both blogs are back to shutting down comments and changing discussion settings at least daily, with no input from me.

If anyone has input, I’m all ears. Don’t know where else to turn…

    Hey,

Have you tried getting rid of any widgets you created with extra code in them, too?

    (@missamber09)

This has happened to me three times in the last month. I wake up in the morning to discover that the comments on all my blog posts are closed but I did not close them. Then, today, I woke up to find out that somehow my blog had set itself so you have to be logged in to wordpress to leave a comment.

This is REALLY frustrating me, could we get some answers please!!

    (@rjhayton)

I started a new thread on this topic too: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/another-comments-problem-mabye-a-new-wp-30-bug?replies=8

Not getting help there either. It happened twice for me separated by about 2 weeks. I didn’t do anything to spark the change in settings either time.

    Thread Starter AlisonMooreSmith

    (@alisonmooresmith)

rjhayton, no, I haven’t gotten rid of all my widgets. :/ I hate to go there. Ack. But worth a try, since NO ONE IS LISTENING!

    Hasn’t happened since I last wrote a month ago, but since there’s trouble…I’m B-A-A-C-K!

Since I rarely get comments, I didn’t notice they were closed until I saw Akismet was finding no spam. Even they can’t get in. I suspect it’s spam that is triggering this somehow.

Wait – I just checked and Alison is right:
    (1) Users must be registered and logged in to comment
    (2) An administrator must always approve the comment
were also checked, and I never ever check them. How could spam get in our admin?

It tells me I have 2.8.4. It never told me this before – in Dashboard box. (yeah, I gotta upgrade.)

Not happening in my other blogs. Will read other threads on this.

    (@alisonmooresmith)

Mine are kind of stable right now AS LONG AS I DON’T OPEN COMMENTS. Yea, lousy solution.

If I go into either blog and manually open up all the comments, it trips the bug to close them all, usually within a few hours, always within about a day. Really annoying and no one seems to notice.
