Comments for resources in a plugin?

I’m hooking a custom app into my WP as a plugin. Was curious if there was a way to utilize the comments system inside my plugin so I could have users comment on things that aren’t exactly “posts”? By looking at table structure, it doesn’t look like an easy task but perhaps someone has done something like this before?
