Comments gone missing – not sure why…

    My comments (going back over 4 years) have suddenly disappeared from my “Guest Book” page on my holiday letting website. I’m not sure if I have done something that caused this: I contacted Akismet, as I had renewed that a couple of weeks before, and they say that their plugin will not have deleted comments.
    I do not change the website on a regular basis, only going in every month or so to add more comments, so the last time I saw the comments will have been in June or July 2015. I am also not by any means an expert with WordPress – so any (simple) help suggestions would be welcome.
    One forum post mentions going in to the database, but I can’t see how to do this… I did try to change the theme (twenty eleven to twenty fourteen, again from a forum suggesiton), and only succeeded in losing the original “look” of the website…
