Comments have disappeared

I don’t know why comments are no longer showing in the posts. On the dashboard, I get a total count of comments and a listing of the comments but I cannot get to the comments when I click on the comment title. If a post has comments, there is no indication at the top or bottom showing how many comments there are for that post. One of the posts has 6 comments (https://accessible-techcomm.org/in-memoriam-fabien-vais/) but they don’t show for people to read them.

I had comments for that post turned off because I don’t want more comments for it but I want the old ones to show. If I click on to allow comments, then the old comments show and there is a comment box for adding a new comment. There still isn’t a count of the number of comments made to that post.

If I have a cutoff date of so many months set in Settings/Discussion, that also makes comments disappear. I think it used to be that that would disable the ability to post new comments but old ones could still be seen.

Is there something in the theme I can set so the comments will show if the ability to add new comments is off or gets shut down after so many months? And also for the total count of comments made to a post?
