Comments not displaying. “Discussion” settings correct.

All of a sudden comments on the front end of my site stopped displaying. They stopped on 3/11/22 at about 8:15 PM PST time. Prior to that they had been displaying properly. The comments were not deleted and appear on the admin side.

I restored the site from a backup and moved the “broken” site to a dev environment. An example of the broken site is here: https://mlrdevelop.wpengine.com/1-to/411-music-group/

The working site is here: https://musiclibraryreport.com/1-to/411-music-group/

If you scroll to the end of the post on each link you will see the difference. Strangely, on the broken version I can add a new comment and that will display but the older ones will not display.

All the “Discussion” settings are correct and I cleared all caches. I also disabled all plugins on the dev (broken) site but the problem persists.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

    Thank you.

    BTW WordPress 5.8.3 php 7.4

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you can install plugins, install and activate “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/
It will add some additional features under the menu item under Tools > Site Health.
On its troubleshooting tab, you can Enable Troubleshooting Mode. This will disable all plugins, switch to a standard WordPress theme (if available), allow you to turn your plugins on and off and switch between themes, without affecting normal visitors to your site. This allows you to test for various compatibility issues.
There’s a more detailed description about how to use the Health Check plugin and its Troubleshooting Mode at https://make.www.ads-software.com/support/handbook/appendix/troubleshooting-using-the-health-check/

Thanks @t-p will give those ideas a try.

Just tried those suggestions. Health Check shows “12 items with no issues detected”. The only thing I see in scheduling is “The scheduled event, nxs_hourly_event, is late to run.”

Still the same problem. Comments not displaying. Also tried it in a Private window.

Had this site up for 12 years and have never seen a problem like this.

Data is showing on REST API properly, however, I am noticing comment-page-xx in the comments link and some big numbers in xx. e.g comment-page-1731 I am unsure if those numbers are expected there or not.
But on a live website, if I check the same REST API, I am getting comment-page-1, which seems correct.

@artmuns Try saving permalink page settings again and if you have any plugin related to comment, Disable that and check if that solved the problem.

Also, Check if the staging website is missing the .htaccess file or any have different & additional code than the live website.

    @vijayhardaha thanks for the ideas.

I had tried re-saving permalinks earlier and tried again but no change.

I do have the “Simple Comment Editing” plugin but disabling doesn’t fix the problem. In fact disableing all of the plugins do not fix the problem.

.htaccess is on the site and there was some additional code from WP-Rocket. I removed that but still did not fix the problem.

This is a real head scratcher.

I looked at the “broken site” wp_comments table and there are 28667 comments. The table wp_commentmeta has only 3 entries.

On the the live site the wp_comments table has over 30,000 comments and the wp_commentmeta table has over 400 entries all akismet entries. Don’t know if this means anything.

I will have to check how comments rewrite system works then I can provide you better information on it.

However have you tried re-saving permalink after deactivating the comment plugin that you were using?

Any update on this? I am also facing similr problem in our site https://sobbanglay.com.
Previously commens were showing but suddely it stopped displaying in frontend.

It only shows pingbacks as comments but real users comments are available in backend but not in front end.

My problem seemed to be created with a Yoast plugin update and went away with a subsequent Yoast update.
