• I run a wordpress site with active an active community who make comments.

The uses the membership plugin PMPro in case this is relevant.

Up until 12 hours ago, there was no problem.

Now all comments beyond a few hours ago have disappeared from the front end.

I can still see them when logged in as Administrator under ‘comments’.

I have not installed updates or plugins during that time.

The only thing I can think of is that old bbpress plugin may have something to do with it.

Somebody left a comment on the forum for the first time in weeks (we no longer use that forum on the site, I have been meaning to delete it altogether), they left that comment in between the last tie the site was working fine, and when it suddenly stopped showing comments, so I wonder if this is somehow relevant.

So I tried disabling bbpress but it has not made a difference.

    Can anybody help me?

  • I’m seeing a lot of posts with closed comments. Is that normal?

Can you show a post where you have comments in admin but they don’t show up in the frontend?

You can disable bbPress temporarily to see if that fixes comments. I doubt it would affect comments though.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

No, most posts are not comments closed. One or two are, but the rest, the comments are open.

I think PMPro (and/or the theme) make it look like comments are closed for non logged-in visitors, it has been this way for a while.

For example, the latest post on the site is entitled ‘Midnight in the Desert…’, comments for that are open, there should be about ten comments there, instead the only ones which show are those left today, the rest do not show.

Also, the last comment left before the problems began was by me, see this image:

Now all the comments left before the problems began, no longer show even which post they were posted to.

In that image, you can see the latest comments still say on the right hand column WHERE they were posted, but the prior comments (the bottom two on that image) do not show this information.

The comments on the post you mentioned are closed, which is different from being protected by PMPro.

Can you edit this latest post and check Discussions metabox, make sure “Allow Comments” is turned on. If it is unchecked, check it and update the post.

If you don’t see the Discussions metabox, check your screen options (top right corner) and check the Discussions option. It will unhide that metabox.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Here is what it looks like for me:

Comments are and always were allowed for this post.

You should try disabling PMPro plugin to see if comments show up correctly. You can put your website in a maintenance mode, so the public can’t access private content while you’re troubleshooting.

    Thank you ProjectArmy,

I tried disabling PMPro, it didn’t work.

I’d be happy to pay somebody to fix this problem for me.

Where is the best place to organise this kind of work?

    Fiverr? Upwork?

My webhost wants $70 which is excessive for what I am sure is a small problem.
