This is a rather weird error, but I’ll try to describe it as best I can.

For 2 months now, my blog (now 1 year old) has been randomly locking comments on ALL my articles. In order to re-instate commenting, I have to go into each article (about 30 of them now) and re-check the the “Allow comments” section.

Now I wouldn’t mind doing this so much if it was a 1 time deal. However, each time I go through the trouble to unlock comments on all my articles, a few days will pass and my WordPress blog will suddenly shut down all commenting again!

I’ve also noticed that whenever this happens, the settings for “discussion” also revert back to what appears to be default settings. For example, I’ve never had the “administrator must always approve the comment” option checked; however, each time my blog shuts down comments, I find this option checked (along with others). It’s like my blog is trying to rebel against comments or something.. ?

Originally I feared this was an error caused by a new theme, because 1.) I’ve never set my blog to automatically close any comments at any time, and 2.) this new theme seemed to be causing my whole blog to run very slow. But after switching my theme to the new popular “Twenty Ten” theme, my blog did the same exact “comment closing” action yesterday as it had before with the other themes.

Apparently it’s not a theme thing. Any idea what is causing this and/or how I can fix it?

This is getting really frustrating, because every few days, I have to manually go through, edit each article, and uncheck “allow comments.” Then I have to fix the discussion settings. Talk about a major pain!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks. ??

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Dear esmi,

Thanks. I’m going to look into the plugins a little closer. The first I noticed – many plugins needed to be upgraded, so I took care of that immediately.

I only have three plugins activated at this time, so re-activation trial-and-error shouldn’t be too much of a pain.

I’ll report back after testing. Thanks again.

I’m having the same problem and see that a few others are also and am wondering if anyone has figured out which plugin might be causing this problem.

My comments are being closed on a fairly regular basis and I have to go in and edit about 170 posts each time it happens. It’s getting extremely frustrating.
