Comments randomly turn off on all posts

  • Every so often, comments on ALL posts on my blog (amybites.com) are randomly disallowed. I don’t do anything to cause this, and I never know when it’s going to happen. When this happens, it’s like it resets all of my commenting settings, and I have to go in and manually set each post to allow comments. I also have to re-configure all of my “discussion” preferences because it sets them to all of the options that I didn’t have selected. It’s incredibly annoying to find out that users haven’t been able to comment on my site for 2 days and I had no idea. And then, of course, re-allowing comments on each and every post manually is super time-consuming and frustrating.

    I’ve been searching for answers on this but I haven’t had any luck finding anything in the forums or anything online. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on how to stop this from happening?

    have you tried:

    -deactivating ALL plugins (yes, all) temporarily to narrow down the problem. If the problem goes away, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s). If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems (because the hooks remain unless plugins completely removed or some plugins stick around in cached files. So by renaming the folder, you break them and force them inactive). If applicible, also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder. The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old

    – To rule out any theme-specific issue, try switching to the unedited default twenty ten theme for a moment using the WP dashboard. If you don’t have access to your admin area, you can switch to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides.
