Comments sent directly to Trash

    Just like the title says, I have comments that are going directly to Trash. Some are from new people commenting, others are from people who have previously been approved to comment without moderation. The approved people are using the same email address they’ve used in the past.

    I’m self-hosted. I was asked to post this here since I am using Askimet, however, I don’t think it’s an Askimet issue.

    Hi there,

    For those comments that are being directly trashed, can you click on the history link? That should show if a plugin, blacklist or admin user is moving the comments there.

    One other thing to check is your Comment Blacklist at /wp-admin/options-discussion.php. Comments matching terms there will be put directly in the trash.

    I’m the only admin, so no one else is moving the comments to trash and I don’t have a black list, so that isn’t the issue either. The only actual setting I have for moderation is a)If it’s their first comment, they have to be held for moderation (which always goes to pending, not trash) and b) any comments with 2 or more links are to be held for moderation, which should also send them to pending, not trash.

    Both of the comments sent to the trash are by people who have been previously approved and do not contain any links at all.

    The history for one comment states “2 days ago – Comment was caught by wp_blacklist_check.”
    The blacklist shouldn’t be doing anything since there’s nothing entered.

    Edited to Add: I’d like to add that Askimet cleared the comment. I was sent here by the WP Support Forums because they thought you’d be able to help, but if Askimet is not causing the issue, perhaps I should go back to the post I placed there?

    We can try a few more things here. How comfortable are you with the workings of WordPress? Are you able to find out the value of the ‘blacklist_keys’ option in the database?

    If you’re not familiar with querying the database manually, this plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-options-editor/ might be helpful.

    Ok. Just to be sure that it’s empty and doesn’t contain some hidden character, can you go to /wp-admin/options-discussion.php on your site, select everything in the blacklist box, delete it, and then save?
