Comments stop working when permalinks are used

I think you need to clarify a bit here — that is, what do you mean by “stop working”? Does the comment form not display on your permanent pages? Or does it display but comments don’t get submitted?

FYI, I’ve never had a problem with permalinks and comments. I’d wonder what you might have done different — but, of course, we’d still need to know what you mean by “stop working”.

I tired this on an unmodified (everything at default) install of wordpress 1.5 and here is basically what happens.

With permalinks disabled:
Under each post is a link titles “no comments” which, when clicked, directs the person to https://rtadams89.dyndns.org:9555/blog/?p=8#comments where they can type a comment.

When I change the permalink structure to “/index.php/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/” clicking the “no comments” link takes the user to https://rtadams89.dyndns.org:9555/blog/index.php/2005/12/22/sll-support/#comments which accomplishes nothing more than refreshing the page. There is no comment entry forum, or anything different than from before clicking the link.

Are you running this locally? If so, what is it run on? Netcraft tells me the site is registered with Cox Communications as the host, but no sites are listed.

The problem is not related to comment because I notice that e.g.

Does not work either. I suspect incorrect mod_rewrite’s.

Yes, it’s run on a windows pc running abyss web server. It’s hosted over my cox cable connection and uses dyndns.org to give it a host name. Currently I have it set up with no permalinks. If you go to the site now, the comments work. If you would like to go there an try it out, then post back, I’ll set up permalinks, and you can revisit it to see the problem.

Your server does not respond at the moment. Have you switched off your computer?

Has anybody else got an idea what may be causing it? In a nutshell, it’s a comment-permalink incompatibility, it seems (Windows, localhost)…

Sorry, the server goes off at 10:30 Arizona time and comes back on a 6:15.

I have just bound a comment to the SSL item (“Be aware that SSL slows crawling down.”). It is queued for moderation it seems. It is also displayed to me due to the cookie, so we know this works. When you enable permalinks, you say this will break. I reread your description yet again, but can’t help much further. Here is a suggestion:

Enable permalinks and direct users to the comment pages without the permanlink structure. This should look like e.g. index.php?p=3. Put a link at this page for people to link to perhaps? This would link to duplication though, so as I think about it again, better forget about it…

Your comment shows up fine now. I’m going to set up a permalink structure and you will see that you can no longer get to the comments. Try it out.

Update: Do permalinks rely on the .htaccess file? I ask this because abyss web server does not use or understand .htaccess files. Could that be my problem?

I have included index.php in my permalink. Always have.

@mushu, the OP used index.php all along in the permlinks structure. I have no idea what else to suggest, but it seems like the server software s/he runs might be the culprit. I could be very wrong though.

I’m thinking it’s my server software. The only difference between Apache and my server software is that mine doesnt use .htaccess files. Would this affect permalinks?

I have exactly the same problem…
With permalinks active, no comments!
Funrthermore, even with permalinks active, if I call the page with the original numbered url, comments are back again!
So, it’s a problem of calls and linkage probably…
