• Hi, this just started on my blog last week.

Regular weekly commenters (I don’t have many) are now showing up as ANONYMOUS; their names and avatars used to appear. I have not changed my settings in Discussion.

By searching my comments and filtering by IP address, I know these commenters are not new to me, though it shows them as having “O approved” comments. I’ve been able to edit the comments and add in their identification, but would like to fix this.

Can you please assist? Thank you!

Your comment form has no fields for non-logged-in users to say who they are. I’d expect such comments to show as anonymous. A typical non-logged-in comment form usually has at least username and email fields (and the comment field). Not sure why your form lacks such fields. It appears to be a Jetpack comment form. If this is not the way you want your comment form to work, I recommend asking in the Jetpack dedicated support forum.

Hi bcworkz, thank you so much for your feedback. It’s really helpful. I didn’t realize my form does not have fields for those who are not logged in. I will connect with Jetpack for that.

The only thing is others who previously did not require log-in are also showing as Anonymous. They have commented numerous times on my blog in the same manner, have no trouble leaving a comment, but now they show up Ananymous as if they are commenting for the very first time.

If this helps, a friend is also having the same issue and wrote about it on his blog. https://lifeinmyyears.com/2022/08/24/the-anonymous-bug/

It seems to be a larger issue. Appreciate your help , thank you.

Your friend’s description indicates the problem runs deeper than I expected. I assumed that your commenters simply didn’t bother to log in, but apparently even those logged in show up as anonymous. As it’s related to the Jetpack comment form, your more recent post in their support forum is the right place to seek resolution.
