I found a couple of posts in the past, but nothing that specifically addressed this question:

Does the WordPress license permit a person to use the sell a blogging service based on the WordPress platform? Many plug-ins are expressly for non-commercial use, but what about the physical code of WordPress?

    Thanks, everyone.

  • Not knowing much about the subject, but having read quite a few discussions regarding, I think the only real restriction is that you have to provide source code to those that purchase the end product, and they are free to do what that want with it. However if you are simply selling a service (blog hosting for example) that uses WP, I don’t think there’s any issue. A search of the forums for GPL might yield some of those discussions.
