• We have a client who wants his staff to show up in search, but since we used Staff List Pro (and wordpress is horrid at search) they don’t. I thought surely Relevannsi would do it. But it seems to be hanging on the Staff List shortcodes. It only gets some of them done with a broken layout for search.Indexing it with the ‘expanded shortcodes’ disabled gives us no results for the Staff. Is there anyway to make the 2 plugins cooperate? It specifically shows the staff list tables as being available for indexing and I thought checking the options would be enough. But that didn’t work.

    Any suggestions?

I installed the free version of Staff List on my test site, generated some staff and a simple template, put the template on a page using the shortcode, indexed the page, and it just works. The staff details can be found with Relevanssi and they show up in excerpts.

You don’t want to index the Staff List custom post types, because they are not meant to be accessed directly. You want to index the page that has the shortcode.

As far as I can tell, both abcf-staff-single and abcf-staff-list shortcodes should work just fine with Relevanssi.

ok…any idea why its stalling for me then? The profile/personname isn’t showing in my result and the search layout page is breaking when I enable the plugin. I’ve used it before and didn’t have it happen with the same theme. So I’m guessing its not the theme.

Which shortcode are you using? How have you set it up? I’ve only tested with the free version, so perhaps Pro does something different. I can’t tell.

If you search for a name in the staff list, do you find the correct page? Ie. is this a problem in indexing or in searching? If the post can be found, but the search results page is broken (ie. it’s an excerpt problem), there may be something you can do about it. Can you show me a screenshot of how the layout breaks?

oh yes. Searching name in Staff List works fine. If I click go to click profile from the staff page that is generated by shortcode it goes to the right individual profile page. So the indexing did stall and then I clicked refresh and tried indexing just unindexed pages. But it isn’t seeing the individual profile pages.

I’ve also posted for supporting on the theme (GeneratePress) itself (in case they could advise on the weird theme break) and they say the javascript is being pushed down into the body and suggesting it may be a plugin. The only plugin I added was Relevannsi. Not sure why that would affect CSS since it hasn’t done it on any other site and I use both theme and Relevannsi fairly often in combination.

I am at least getting better search results than no Relevanssi since the whole staff list was ignored before, even the main pages. So I very much want it to work.

I’d posted a screencap but don’t know how to do that here.

Relevanssi can’t index individual staff profile pages: they are not proper WordPress pages, they’re just one page that contains nothing and shows the profile data based on a query variable. That’s something Relevanssi just doesn’t understand. Relevanssi can only index the staff list, because that’s a real page with actual content in it.

Can I see the actual site? That would be the best, because then I could see the source code and JavaScript console as well. Without seeing it myself, I can’t really say anything about the broken layout, because I don’t know what’s happening. Relevanssi should not affect any JavaScript, though.
