Today I noticed that the ‘Events and News’ admin dashboard widget/box writes almost 0,5 MB to wp_options database tabel by writing a transient.

I know how to clean transients, by using a plugin. I also know how to disable the Events and News widget, by using the ‘Disable Sidebar and Dashboard Widgets’ plugin, but does this stop writing to the database too?

I generally like WordPress, but I really don’t like that so many plugins and parties write megabytes to my database and leave unwanted, sometimes sensitive (I found an old Bitcoin address too) data, once uninstalled or disabled. Why is this ‘Events and News’ forced upon us in the first place?

  • Unfortunately, I don’t know which plugin “Events and News” belongs to, but to clarify your question you should contact its support. Only they can tell you why the data is stored there and, if necessary, how you can reduce/prevent this.

Of course, you are free to deactivate plugins you no longer want or need at any time. As soon as they are deactivated, they cannot cause any new data. Whether they clean up existing data is their own decision. Normally, they should only really remove everything they leave in the database when they delete the plugin. If they don’t clean it up, as mentioned above, contact the support of the plugin in question.

Thanks for your answer. It’s not a plugin. WordPress ‘Events and News’ is a widget in your main Admin Dashboard. It apparently writes 0.5 MB to the database and is full of links to external websites, like gutenbergtimes.com . It feels like spam.

I will contact the support of the ‘Disable Sidebar and Dashboard Widgets’ plugin.
