completely down website, help would be awesome

  • Hello Internet,
    I am Hoster of a podcast.
    Ca. two weeks ago (i had a pretty full schedule and no chance to tackle this earlier), our website just completely… broke.

    Since my Hosting knowledge is very limited, i really don’t know how to describe it more precisely. Neither the start page nor the /wp-admin backend are reachable, and our hosting company (strato.com) couldn’t help us because, as they said, the problem lays inside our WordPress installation, to which they obviously have no insight.

    website is https://www.projektpinoekel.com and whenever you try to open it, all you get is a extremely strange block of text, that does not provide me any enlightenment.

    Some things that may help:

    • We are using the “Podlove” Podcasting plugin for WordPress (which on other podcasts i host still works perfectly fine and whose support also assured me that the Plugin is not the thing causing the problem)
    • we haven’t made any recent changes to our website before it just randomly blacked out
    • the feed that is submitted to the apple podcastconnect-service seems broken too, since errors are shown there.

    I hope my english is somehow understandable and that somebody might help me/us really soon since we’d love to release new episodes asap.
    I am very glad for any advice, since recreating the entire page would really be a pain in the a**.

    – You need to start working your way through the resources on this page.
    – Other things you should do:

    • Change passwords for all users, especially Administrators and Editors.
    • If you upload files to your site via FTP, change your FTP password.
    • Re-install the latest version of WordPress.
    • Make sure all of your plugins and themes are up-to-date.
    • Update your security keys.

    – If you’re unable to clean your site(s) successfully, there are reputable organizations that can clean your sites for you. Off hand, couple of names that come to my mind are Sucuri and Wordfence.

    Hey @t-p ,
    Thank you very much for your quick answer.
    These news are very frustrating. Since we’re not making any profit with our Podcast, it makes no sense for us to pay a huge amount of money for a cleanup-service.
    It seems that what we have to do is completely clear up our server via FTP and then rebuild our website form scratch and memory. The idiot that I am has also never made a backup of the website.

    Thank you for your help anyway, at least we now know what happened.
