• I recently updated to the latest version of WordPress 3.9 on my website [https://www.LEHSYS.com] and I have been using WordPress to compose my articles. When I would use the compose window in WordPress, the composition window would be the same width as the published article, but since I’ve updated to 3.9, the composition window is the full width of the screen.

The only time that I get the proper aspect ratio for the composition is what I choose the option for ‘distraction free writing’, but if I use that option I don’t get to see all the formatting functions; making me switch back and forth between the two different modes.

I would like to know if there’s a way to force WordPress to understand what the proper aspect ratio is supposed to be on the composition window/box?

I thought the latest version of WordPress 3.9 was supposed to make the composition process more fluid and easy; it actually seems like I’ve lost some abilities with the latest update.

Is anyone else seeing this problem?

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    Emsi,
    Thanks for the quick reply…

I turned off my cache. That didn’t work.
I deactivated all the plugins and reactivated them as prescribed. I even went to the FTP and renamed the plug-ins folder to ‘.hold’. That didn’t work.

With the cache still off; I’m using the ‘Graphene‘ theme, I switched to ‘Twenty Fourteen‘ and there was no improvement. That didn’t work.

I’m not comfortable with the last option; seems extreme for something trivial like the compose window size not working properly. Obviously, there’s something wrong here, but a complete reload of WordPress is superfluous for something like this. The WordPress installation is reading the information properly at some point because the ‘distraction free writing’ finds the settings correctly.

There needs to be an option/plugin to have the compose window snap to post width. Is there a plug-in for that?

I’m not comfortable with the last option

Your site’s content is all stored in your database – with the exception of uploaded media files stored in the wp-content folder. So as long as you avoid that folder, you will be fine. All you are doing is uploading a fresh set of WordPress core files. So there’s no need to worry unduly about carrying this out.

There is no magic bullet in these situations. This is just the start of basic troubleshooting – a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps. It’s entirely possible that you have a missing or damaged core file and we need to rule that out by uploading a fresh set of core files.

There needs to be an option/plugin to have the compose window snap to post width.

Not that I’m aware of. The whole back end display is controlled by core CSS and it should re-adjust to fit your current browser window.

Can you navigate to the New Post screen and select Screen Options at the top of the page? Then check to see how many columns are selected.

    Emsi,
Thanks for your help, I completely understand this is a troubleshooting process— I will see about doing a reload on the WordPress files.

I’m just a bit put out with having stuff work fine for an over extended period of time [over the course of months of upgrades] and then stop working after an update that’s supposed to offer more abilities.

In regards to the number of columns during composition, I have two selected. I have tried 1 but no luck.

If these changes don’t work I’ll just [reluctantly] use the ‘distraction free writing’ option, or something else. There’s always another way to skin a cat.

then stop working after an update that’s supposed to offer more abilities.

Unfortunately, this is always going to be a problem for a small number of users who are running themes or plugins that are “doing things the wrong way ™”. Additionally, out of 2 or 3 million updates, there is always going to be a small percentage of users who experience problems due to a temporary server or network problem – resulting in a faulty upgrade. The core file upload should rule that one out.

Also, can you try creating a new users, then login as that user and see if you have the same problems with the compose window? There’s also an outside chance that you have some local cookie corruption.

I went in to WordPress and issued a ‘re-update‘ to the installation. Nothing changed there; and no errors. I created a new admin account, logged in and went to new post; same issue. For cookies, I have tried the troubleshooting steps on Chrome, Internet Explorer and Firefox.

I thank you for all the suggestions provided. I’m going to circle back around [one more time] and run through everything. Who knows, maybe the next release it’ll be fixed?! ??

    Later,
    Larry
