    Dear developers,

    I hoped to use Directory smash setting to compress extra (adaptive) images my theme creates, but this does not seem to be possible. That is, I can’t choose wp-content/uploads/2019 folder (it’s “locked”).

    My understanding is that bulk smash will process only actual images registered in the media library (originals), what I am after is to compress derived thumbnails and alike create by a theme.

    I would greatly help to be able to provide a filename regex to limit the plugin to certain files only (i.e. *abc*.jpg)

    Regards,
    Denis.

  • Hi @davydov-denis,

    It’s actually the opposite – on the free version of Smush, the original will be skipped and all thumbnail sizes, that are properly registered by a theme, will be compressed. You can check that by uploading an image, smushing it and comparing the before/after file sizes. Also in Bulk Smush settings you can select what image sizes should be optimized.

    Best regards,
    Anton

    Hi Anton.

    oh, ok. I see a note on this now in the “Bulk smush” setting.

    So a follow up question to clarify “By default, Smush only compresses thumbnails and image sizes generated by WordPress.”

    what if thumbnails are not registered by a theme? I use a theme which have the following convention to create thumbnails for <name>.jpg to be in the same folder as the original <name>-uai-300x200.jpg (and alike)?

    Along those I also have WordPress thumbnails like <name>-150x150.jpg but I don’t care about those as they are unused.

    Regards,
    Denis.

    @davydov-denis,

    The easiest way to check is to go to bulk smush settings, there will be an option to select image sizes. Most themes do register their image sizes with WordPress, so you should see them there. For Visual Composer there will be an integration module in the upcoming update.

    Best regards,
    Anton

    I tried smushing a single image from a library and see that Smush does NOT pick up unregistered thumbnails.

    So please consider this as a feature request, i.e. add a checkbox to make Smush look for other thumbnails that may not be registered properly.

    What theme are you using, so we can test?

    Uncode https://themeforest.net/item/uncode-creative-multiuse-wordpress-theme/13373220

    It creates thumbnails for its adaptive images using the following naming convention:

    <name>-uai-<W>x<H>.jpg, for example image-uai-750x501.jpg will correspond to image.jpg.

    If you could extend your plugin to cover such unregistered images, perhaps some of the 50k users of that theme will also start using your plugin. Currently they recommend EWWW Image Optimizer on this page https://support.undsgn.com/hc/en-us/articles/214003845-Adaptive-Images but it has other limitations, at least from my point of view. Anyway, more options are always welcome, I would say.

    @davydov-denis,

    I can see that the theme is based on WPBakery Page Builder (Visual Composer). That’s excellent – the upcoming Smush update will have support for the theme. I can’t give an exact date for release, but it should be really soon.

    Best regards,
    Anton

    Hi Anton,

    I don’t think WPBakery Page Builder is relevant here. Yes, the theme uses it, but the way thumbnails are generated is a different story. The theme chooses which one to use based on device screen using its scripts.

    Unless Smush it can pick up those thumbnails generated by a theme, I don’t think they will play together well. That’s unfortunate.

    Cheers,
    Denis.
