    I have been assigned the task of creating a new look for my employer’s WordPress website. I have found several great looking themes on an independent site that are possible options. Before I make any purchases, however, I would like to know if it is possible to keep our entire database (images, copy, blog entries) intact in order to seamlessly integrate our current site with the new one. Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Applying a theme should not do anything to your database, although it is always a good idea to make sure you have a backup of your entire site, database and all before you make any major changes to it…

    A couple of other things to consider

    1. What version of WordPress are you running? Are you on the latest?
    2. Where are you buying the themes from? Do they have a good reputation.

    if the answer to number 1 is yes, then buying a theme froma shop with a good reputation will make the process even easier and hopefully stress free.

    1. We have version 3.5.1.
    2. The themes I’m considering are on Themeforest, all with high customer ratings.

    I’m glad to hear that all our previous hard work will not disappear, as we are a busy retailer and can’t have our website down for an extended period of time. I appreciate your help. What is the easiest way to back up our database?

    There are any number of different backup plugins available.I’m personally a fan of backupbuddy from Ithemes.com. It has a cost to it, but I find the cost to be justified as it works as great backup and migration tool.

    Backupbuddy is a good one, just like adavis mentioned.

    One thing to remember about changing themes is that most of them (expecially commercial themes) normally have their own ways of setting up a few things. I’ve seen some that take over the home page layout, set up their own sidebars and page templates and more.

    The main issue that I see when changing themes is sidebars. There’s not many times when sidebars transfer over from theme to theme, so chances are that you’ll have to re-create all of the widgets that you have got set up now.

    If you can, I’d advise you to set up a local copy of the site somewhere and update the theme on that. that way you can see exactly what it will be like and what changes/additions need to be made to get it to look the way that you want it to.

    How do you make a copy of the site, so to not “disturb the current theme the public is seeing”?
    I’m watching tutorials currently for the Thesis theme, If I activate Thesis, the current theme goes wacky.
