Conditional placeholder for custom attribute?

Is there a way to create a conditional placeholder for a custom attribute, in the formats? I made an “event website” attribute that should only be displayed if it’s populated. Since there’s a heading and it’s a live link, I need to enclose that section in a conditional. Would be nice to be able to do this without resorting to a custom template. Thanks!
