    Hello all,

I have switched hosting over to a Dedicated Virtual (DV) server at Media Temple. I am having some issue configuring the ftp for updating plugins, wp etc. Basically, it’s coming back with a function error that the script doesn’t have permissions to write to the directory tmp. I’m not sure where this directory is temporarily located and what I should be changing the permissions to. I’m sure it’s a really simple change, but not sure where to begin.

Any other tips on which folders to make writable and which to harden for setting up WP on DV would be apprecviated. Thanks!

  • Maybe you need to change the CHMod permissions for it?
Submit a ticket at MediaTemple’s asking them to give you the details about this, including the path to the temp forlder.

Thanks, but I’m not even sure where tmp is located. There is one waaaay at the root but that’s even before vhost so I doubt highly it’s that. I have root access, so if I knew where the directory was or should be that would help. Here’s the error:

Warning: touch() [function.touch]: SAFE MODE Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 10001 is not allowed to access /tmp owned by uid 0 in /var/www/vhosts/example.com/httpdocs/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 199

I’ll put a call in to tech support as well.

Tech support had no idea. So here is the question. Where is WordPress looking for /tmp? I can create of CHMOD the file if I know where it is supposed to be. Thanks!

Ok, figured it out. The permissions on wp-admin and wp-content was incorrect.
