Configuring WP Super Cache Properly On High Traffic Site
-
I’ve been using WPSC for a while and I think it’s a great plugin. I can only imagine how much money this plugin has saved in hosting costs to thousands of bloggers worldwide. Anyways.
I have a very high traffic site that gets about 50,000/day and about 100,000 page views/day… and growing… The blog has over 3,500 posts and 30,000 comments. For info, you can see this blog here https://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/
As the site grew, I went from shared hosting to a private server with DreamHost, which is working well for me so far.
Today I tried to fine tune my configuration of WPSC and, as a non-technical person, I was kind of overwhelmed by the description and the meaning of each option.
I was hoping someone here would be able to tell me what’s best for me, while making sure the site still works as it should (ie. showing up-to-date posts when posts are updated or commented on).
1. WP SUper Cache Status
WPSC is fully on. Additionally, I have the Cache Rebuild and Mobile Support options turned on.
Should I also turn on “Only refresh current page when comments made”? What are the benefits and downside of this option?
Anything else I should do under this section?
2. Preload Cache
I have read the description of this option several times and I still don’t understand whether it’s good for me or not. Currently, “preload cache” is OFF. Should I turn it on? If so, and considering I have over 3,500 (and 5-6 more added each day), should I just choose to load a fraction of this number?
Should I turn “preload mode” on? Again, I read the description but can’t figure out if it’s good for me or not.
3. Super Cache Compression
It’s currently OFF. Should I turn this ON? What are the benefits of it? What are the downsides?
4. Expiry Time & Garbage Collection
It’s currently set at 1800 seconds. I read that busy sites should have this around 300 seconds. Wouldn’t it make the site slower to constantly clear the cache and renew it every 5 minutes?
Conclusion
I know it’s a lot of questions but I tried to make it as clear as possible. Thank you in advance for any help you can give about this matter.
