Confirmations

I have a form that includes payments and have successfully completed a transaction through PayPal using a friend to test send me ￡1.
However, the payment integration does not work in the way I expect. It registers a successful form submission even if the payment is abandoned. Furthermore, the confirmation email is sent out as soon as the submit button is pressed rather than after the transaction is completed. Thirdly, no email is sent to the person submitting the form although this seemed to work properly with the form before I added payments.

I am trying to understand how this is any kind of robust payment integration. Surely a submission requiring payment is not successful until the payment has succeeded?
