• hi there,
as i’m totally new with this, i start to get a bit confused by the time… okay, first of all:
i wanted to get a blog, i found wordpress, got my own domain name (yeaahh) and started to test some things, i posted…and so on. so far, i didn’t installed anything!!!
now, i want to add a guestbook, which means i need to install a plugin, after reading me throught the whole world of wordpress, i started to get confused, so i really need to clear my mind with a few things…
    1. i can upload images and even videos to my blog, so wordpress is actually my server, right?
    2. the name of my database is ergo my domain.name which means –>
    name.wordpress.com or is it db.name.wordpress.com?
    3. well, my mySQL name! is this my username which i used to log in with wordpress?

i know, i know, the very basics, but the point is, i tested out to install wp like this and it didn’t work. i searched around the themes in this forum, but the problems most of the people were faced occurred mainly further. so i thought it has to be a problem in the very beginning.

sorry for the problems, i guess you have read them to thousands but it would be great to get a (nice) answer ??

  • Hey,

Your server is wherever your domain is hosted on. It is a physical computer usually located in a big datacenter full of other servers.

    Your database name is probably not the same as your domain name. Did you setup wordpress? If so you would’ve used the database name while doing so. To check, look for wp-config.php. You can open this file in most control panel file managers and you should see something like define('DB_NAME', '<your_db_name_here>');

Below that should be a similar line for DB_USER which is the MySQL name you’re looking for.

    Hope that helps ??

    Hi Scott,
Thanks, well, but that’s exactly my problem. I don’t know which is my mysqlname database name, i know that you can look for that after the installation in this folder you mentioned…I actually wanted to install wordpress (to be able to install plugins) and for that I need these information. all i’ve got is a domain name,.. like: name.wordpress.com and an interface where i can write posts, upload images etc. everything works without setup wordpress, I just have to get online….

Is your blog on wordpress.com or do you have your own host?

i guess it’s on wordpress.com, as i’m able to change pics, themes, images etc…

well….another question ?? do i actually have to install wordpress on my pc? … if my host is wordpress? and how do i install a plugin then?

    well, i’ve got another thought.
so, as you can see, i’m not really aware of what wordpress really is. i thought it provides a domain name, some space and themes to have your own blog, i mean wordpress provides just the very basics. but for plugins i need to install the wordpress software to change the code? am i right there? or totally wrong?
actually my main problem is just, how to get a guestbook on my blog, respectively the one i’ve downloaded (a plugin, as many others…)

    okay, another message ??
sorry for the last few textes, but my confusion was the result of sth else. i’ve never seen a graphic outpout but only the php code. so i guess i need to download a proper php codec for the browser or sth…
can anyone help me out here? i have no idea what software (or codec) to install…
