• I’m confused about how the blog system works in WordPress. How can anyone that doesn’t register on my wordPress website leave comments? I see in the general settings it has a checkbox for “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”, but i’m just curious to why that wouldn’t be the default in the first place and why and how anyone whether spam or not can leave comments on a blog they didn’t register for.

I’m just not understand the blog aspect of WordPress and if someone can help clarify it for me, that would be great.

  • Many blogs allow anonymous comments and WordPress gives you that option. It is not wise however to open anonymous comments without some sort of security in place (Akismet, captcha, etc.) as it will not take long to have pages of spam comments. You can further choose to hold all comments for admin approval and filter out known spam IP’s or keywords.

Some blogs are more adapted to member-only comments but some blogs benefit more from anonymous comments. Many WordPress sites do not allow user registration so anonymous commenting is the only option.
