There was an update sometime ago to groups that said it was removing capabilities which I thought was a pretty great idea. Capabilites seemed pointless to me and I thought that I had removed them. But now capabilities seem to be back and I believe they are related to an issue I’m having. When I sign in as an admin I can go to the page where users who have paid for access to certain training videos are displayed. I can play each video without any issue. But users who are not admins click on the videos and it takes them to the home page in a loop. I am still trying to diagnose this issue so I’m not writing asking for help yet on the loop. But I would like some help to understand what is the benefit of having capabilities and whether I can turn them off. Thanks in advance for your help. Jim

    Hi Jim,

Unless you have recently updated from Groups 1.x to the current version, there has been no change in the way capabilities are handled that should affect you. Capabilities are still supported as you can assign them to groups, but in your case you simply don’t seem to need them, which is fine and probably applies to the majority of users.

In Groups 1.x access restrictions were based on capabilities, but from what you say, I guess that you did the migration back then and don’t need to do anything specific to handle or disable capability-based access at this point.

But users who are not admins click on the videos and it takes them to the home page in a loop.

To me, this does not sound like it’s related directly to Groups. Is it possible that you have somehow protected those videos using another plugin which uses roles for that purpose? The fact that this only happens to non-admins, i.e. those that don’t have the Administrator role, decouples the issue from Groups which bases its restrictions on group memberships.

Thank you for replying so quickly. I fixed the issue. I had assigned the wrong group to one of the videos.

    So II’m good for now.
