Confusion about Upgrading

  • Hello – I’m confused about upgrades. I currently have my own blog at https://www.rustedrobot.com which is hosted by a hosting company and I add plugins, content, etc via my FTP client. I downloaded WordPress right from my hosting company (westhost).

    Is my upgrade process different than those blogs that are wordpress-hosted?

  • I understand that you have full ftp access and full access to your database.
    I doubt your webhost has made any changes to the wordpress you downloaded.
    Thus it shouldnt be any different, but, as always before upgrades, make a full backup of your files and database.

    what shouldn’t be any different? if I download it, where do I download from and where do I put the file?

    You said you downloaded wordpress form your webhost, not from www.ads-software.com. So it could be an edited release from your webhost.
    It’s best if you only download wordpress releases from this site.

    Agreed, it may be a customized version.

    In any case, when you upgrade, your files are located in the wordpress folder when you ftp in (got this from the source code outputted from your blog). This could be inside a www or htdocs folder, depending on how your host is setup.

    When you do upgrade, make sure you backup everything (including DB) first. I’ve never had an upgrade fail on me, but I don’t ever want to risk it.

    So I checked that link you mention above, but it says the following on that page:

    “For these instructions, it is assumed that your blog’s URL is https://example.com/wordpress/. Note that during the upgrade process access to your blog may not work for your visitors. You may consider a plugin like Maintenance Mode (https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/maintenance-mode/).”

    My blog’s URL is not that. It is just https://www.rustedrobot.com

    IN that case everything still applies to your blog, too… just read the example URLs as “example.com” – without the “wordpress” after it.
