Confusion re: stock

On the variation page I have entered the stock quantity to manage stock at variation level, so presumably once that reaches 0 then the product variation should show as Out of Stock.

That makes sense.

However I am confused as I also have to choose from the Stock Status dropdown, and the only options are either In Stock or Out of Stock.

Surely the stock number as defined by the quantity should be determining what is shown on the product page. Or am I supposed to manually change to Out of Stock when that number reaches 0 ?

(NB: in Inventory I have 0, because that is what I was advised previously by support when stock is managed at variation level. However I get the same if I untick manage stock at product level)
