Connecting client sites to Stream

    I manage a lot of sites for clients in WP and Stream could allow me to track changes they have made when diagnosing issues for them.

    However, asking them to connect the wordpress.com account to allow this is a no-go – half of them wouldn’t know what to do by that (and nor should they need to).

    Is there no way I can connect a site to Stream in the same way as I used to be able to, without all of this wordpress.com requirement?

  • Hi abaloo!

    Using WordPress.com SSO (single sign-on) is a security advantage that prevents Stream from ever needing to store user passwords. This is similar to other 3rd party sign-on methods such as login with Facebook, Twitter or Google.

    WordPress.com SSO also supports two-factor authentication. This is an important feature for customers who are extra-concerned about the security of their logins, and we wanted Stream to have this capability.

    The only time the Stream needs to talk to WordPress.com is during sign up, for login credentials. Stream does not “ping” back to the installed plugin (like Jetpack does).

    My suggestion would be to use your WordPress.com ID to connect sites on behalf of your clients.

    Thanks Frankie. I’ve started adding them through our own account as you say. I only wondered:

    • Would there be a limit to the number of sites we can add?
    • Would there be any conflict with the client account sign-in to a different wp.com account for other purposes?

    No, there is no limit to the number of sites you can register.

    Sorry, I’m not sure I totally understand your second question. Can you clarify?

    Thanks again for your help – it really is appreciated.

    I meant: if we connect Stream via our wordpress.com account, and the client connects Jetpack on the same site via their wordpress.com account, for example, will there be no conflict? Will everything still run fine?

    Hey Andrew, thanks for clarifying!

    No, there won’t be any conflict with other plugins using WP.com sign on.

    Once the site is connected to Stream it communicates to our service using a Site ID and API Key pair which is saved in the database, it does not continually reauthenticate with the WP.com credentials.
