I’m a user of WP-Optimizing and getting the below error when attempting to compress a featured image on a post.

cURL error 28: Connection timed out after 10001 milliseconds
There was an error connecting to the image compression server. This could mean either the server is temporarily unavailable or there are connectivity issues with your internet connection. Please try later.

My guess would be a firewall or security plugin, can you deactivate these and see if the issue persists. Here is a guide on this: https://www.siteground.co.uk/kb/curl-error-28-connection-timeout/

    I think it’s releated to https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/resmush-it-api-usage-by-wp-optimize/

When I go to compress an image, it says “Connecting to Smush API Server”, then after a few seconds I get the error.

I disabled Jetpack and Jetpack Boost and still receive the error.

Apologies, I agree. I will follow up with our development team

Hi, any update with this? Thanks!

Smush was recently bought out by another company so we are having to renegotiate our terms. This is ongoing. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Smush compression appears to be working on my site now.

    Still not working for me.

This is happening for me too, exactly the same thing, is there an issue? Why has this been marked as resolved?

Still an issue for me, it is not resolved.

    Hi there,

    It’s Adrian from reSmush.it!

The issue in this scenario seems to be that the REST API is not working on your website anymore, so external CURLs are not working either which make you unable to use the image optimization feature.

This can also be observed in WP-Admin > Tools > Site Health

Unfortunately, this is not something we can fix from our end as it’s not related to our servers and would need to be fixed from your end. When the REST API is working again, everything should be back to normal and you should be able to optimize images with WP Optimize or reSmush.it

If you need more assistance regarding this issue please reach out to us at https://resmush.it/contact/

    All the best,

    @resmushit Hi Adrian,

Site Health is showing Rest API is available. I’ve also paused cloudflare on my site to see if anything there was the issue, but the error persisted when paused.

@resmushit @vupdraft Hey All, finally got around to submitting a ticket to my host (Fastcomet), and they were able to get it resolved! Here is their response:

I was able to recreate the issue when creating a new post and selecting a new featured image. I was able to track down the IPv4 address of the Smush It API endpoint server, which is:

    46.4.70.115

And it appears that this IP was blocked on our servers due to a high access rate originating from it (likely you or somebody else compressing a large number of images at once), as seen below:

    IP TTL COUNTRY IMPORTED_FROM COMMENT
    46.4.70.115 0 DE None access
