Connections reloaded individual header images just not happening

Has anyone had any joy implementing individual category headers in the Connections Reloaded theme?

If you have I would appreciate your advice (or generous offerings of perfect shiny happy code) on how to achieve this.

I have tried every tutorial and tip I can find in the support forums and online documentation for the last three days and I’m stumped – either the cats header load and the home page doesn’t; or they all load the same image; or they load the wrong image, or none at all, and so on until the nauseous headbanging begins.
