    Hi,

I really like the interface of your plugin, and I have tried to configure it on my website. However, in terms og legal compliance, I must make sure that your plugin actually does what is most important: firing cookies/tags based on user consent.

It’s fine that Complianz generates the cookie policy, but it’s more important that the plugin/cookie pop-up actually lives up to the regulations (meaning that it actually store cookies/fire tags based on the user’s cookie accept).

My setup: I have Complianz free version and it is integrated with my Google Tag Manager. Inside my Google Tag Manager, I have 3 tags (GA4, Facebook Pixel, and a conversion tracking tag for another software).

I need to know what to do in the free version to be complete GDPR compliant. Should I “Enable Consent Overview” (beta) inside the Google Tag Manager container settings (see here)? What more should I do?

You provide 2 articles on this consent topic, and it is hard to understand what to do when I have a Google Tag Manager setup – which one should I follow?

So, I would love to know what exactly to do. Because taking consent into consideration is the only way to be compliant with GDPR. Without consent, the Complianz plugin cannot be used to meet the regulations…

    Hi @kdtb1234,

    You can follow; https://complianz.io/definitive-guide-to-tag-manager-and-complianz/

If you have 3 tags, you can configure them as stated in the above article.

All the other things are just optional, including ‘Consent Mode’, which is a Google related feature and not necessary to be compliant.

If you need help with a specific tag setup, let me know. regards Aert

    Hi Aert,

Thanks for the answer. However, I must make sure that consent is set up properly. In Denmark, we just had the first legal case where a company was charged by 30,000 euros because their marketing/statistics tags were fired before the user had accepted cookies.

So you say that the free version is able to set up consent properly and compliant with regulations? I will not need to enable “Google consent mode (beta)”?

I have tried to follow the guide you sent now, but I still don’t think it is working properly. I have put my 2 statistics tags within “Trigger Statistics” and Facebook Pixel within “Trigger Marketing”. I have then tried to Preview it, and all tags are fired right away, which is exactly what should not happen, right?..: https://imgur.com/a/UsJ5U8N

Also, when I imported the json file, my website now also fires 3 other tags – hereamong a 2 (Demo) tags and a so-called “Complianz 7.0 – Consent Mode” tag. That just seems weird. Why should i have another random Google tag firing? Please help me explain what these 3 tags do and if they are necessary?: https://imgur.com/a/O3KC7FJ

    Hi @kdtb1234,

Indeed, you don’t necessarily require Google Consent Mode to create a compliant website. You can remove the (Demo) and 7.0 Consent Mode tags in your case.

If I visit your website in a fresh Incognito window, the Facebook Pixel and GA4 tag (G-WMP3…) are correctly waiting for consent to be obtained in the Cookie Banner before loading.

Perhaps it appeared differently for you in the Tag Manager debug mode, as you visited the site when you had already provided consent at an earlier point; and therefore the tags also fired: as consent was already received.

    Kind regards, Jarno

    Hi Jarno,

Thanks for the reply. Nice to hear it is compliant now then.

What is the purpose of those 3 tags (Demo and 7.0 Consent Mode)? Can I somehow use them? They seem more sophisticated than my current tags firing using the “Trigger Marketing”, “Trigger Statistics”?

I mean, what is the benefit of using the Consent Mode then? Please elaborate.

    Hi @kdtb1234,

The demo tags are meant to serve as an example, and not to be fired as-is, i.e. on how to apply’exceptions’ and other logic to GTM tags.

Consent Mode is a method to communicate consent state to Google, so that they can determine which functionalities of a tag can be loaded based on that. (https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9976101?hl=en)

As Complianz Free is currently not at version 7.x yet, the 7.0 Consent Mode tag therefore isn’t applicable either.

Okay, so what is it that makes that special? And why buy the pro version if the free is sufficient for compliance?

    Hi @kdtb1234,

Do you have any specific inquiries about Consent Mode after reading Google’s article on the subject?

The Pro plugin contains a range of additional features, so while you can definitely create a compliant website using the Free plugin; depending on your use case, the Pro version might be more suitable.

Just to name something that immediately comes to mind, the Free plugin allows you to select a single targeting region in the Wizard, and applies that configuration worldwide; while the Pro version allows you to select multiple regions and displays the applicable variant based on the visitor’s region. A full list of features can be found here: https://complianz.io/features/

I have a problem after having imported your triggers. Look here…: https://imgur.com/a/7F8zKn9

I had 0 users yesterday. I also just tried to access the site, accept cookies, and still the “USERS IN LAST 30 MINUTES” inside GA4 did not show that i was visiting the site.. So something must be wrong?

    Hi @kdtb1234,

It seems to me that a pageview is correctly being fired to the Analytics ID (G-WMP3….), after consent is obtained in the Cookie Banner.

You’re also still firing the “demo/example” Analytics tag in GTM though, so you could remove that one.

In any case, here’s some more details of the pageview to Analytics ID (G-WMP3…), logged with the Google Analytics Debugger extension enabled. It is fired after consent is obtained.

    Kind regards, Jarno

Okay, I have removed the demo tags, and I will get back if it works.

Meanwhile, I have another question. Most websites do not offer the option to reject cookies. They instead only offer the buttons/options “Accept”, and “Accept necessary”. How can i force my visitors those two options? I have deactivated the reject button, but i want a button for “Only accept necessary” cookies.

Another question. How can i add overlay background to make sure the visitor decides on cookie? Like this: https://imgur.com/a/aFTyv4M

    Are you there? ??

    Plugin Contributor jarnovos

    (@jarnovos)

    Hi @kdtb1234,

    1. You can do that by simply renaming the “Deny” button to “Only functional” (or a similar variant), as the Deny button has the same functionality.

    2. Complianz -> Cookie Banner -> Show as soft cookiewall

    Kind regards, Jarno

Thank you so much. If the user changes his/her cookie preferences. What button should they then click on to save those preferences. Let’s say they change preferences and hit the “Allow” button instead of the “Save preferences” button.

    Plugin Contributor jarnovos

    (@jarnovos)

    Hi @kdtb1234,

You would click on “Save preferences” to save the selected category preferences. The allow button accepts all categories, i.e. “Accept all”.
