Hi I have a problem that developed recently possibly concurring with the upgrade to the new version of WordPress. I keep getting Post Update notification emails constantly even though I’m not doing anything on my WordPress website. If I log out the problem stops. Here’s the content of one of the messages:

Message: Post status has been changed; details: ID: 2681,Old status: new,New status: auto-draft,Title: Auto Draft

Any ideas what’s going on? I have another WordPress site on the same host that is fine.
Also the Siteground Site Scanner powered by Sucuri turns up no malware. Thanks!

  • WordPress has a clever way to prevent two or more authors from modifying the same post or page at the same time. They do this by monitoring, every few seconds if the editor has been open by two or more users.

Along with this, WordPress also automatically saves every change as a special type of post called “Draft” which are automatically removed once the post that the user is modifying is saved.

The Sucuri plugin detects these two events and actively reports the suspicious changes. But it is up to the website administrator to decide if the reports are useful or not. If you don’t want to receive the auto-draft alerts, you can opt to turn them off following these instructions:

    • Visit the plugin settings page
    • Click on the “Alerts” tab
    • Scroll down to “Post-Type Alerts”
    • Click the “Show Post-Types Table” button
    • Uncheck anything with the “auto-draft” label
    • Scroll to the end of the table and click “Submit”

I am having this same issue.
Why am I suddenly getting these same updates in the past week or so where previously I was not.
Everyday now there are 10+ of these alerts for post and page id’s that are seemingly not even in existence.
Below is the alert format I am constantly receiving:

    Event: Post Update
    Website: “”
    P Address: “”
    Reverse IP: “”.host.com
    Date/Time: January 14, 2019 4:40 am

Message: Post status has been changed; details: ID: “”,Old status: new,New status: auto-draft,Title: Auto Draft

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

    Um…
Is anyone able to share insight on this matter?
    Hope someone can help.
    Much thanks.

    Hello @nycbrook,

Sorry for the delay answering your question.

Why am I suddenly getting these same updates in the past week or so where previously I was not.

If you recently updated to WordPress 5.x then you will notice a higher number of alerts about “Auto Drafts” which are generated when you edit a post or page, or when a plugin uses the posts table to store temporary data for a form.

Everyday now there are 10+ of these alerts for post and page id’s that are seemingly not even in existence.

Auto Drafts are automatically deleted when the post is fully saved.

    The workflow is as follows:

    • User creates a new post or page
    • WordPress automatically creates a draft
    • User starts typing content for the post
    • WordPress updates the draft with the new content
    • User suddenly closes the post editor without saving
    • WordPress leaves the draft in place until the post is saved
    • User resumes editing the post and then publishes it
    • WordPress automatically deletes the auto draft

This process explains the “[…] seemingly not even in existence” part.

Let me know if you need more information.
