Constantly receiving SEO data optimization updates
-
This isn’t happening on every site I run, but some sites constantly ask to update the SEO Data Optimization saying “Because of a change in your home URL setting, some of your SEO data needs to be reprocessed.”, which it hasn’t. Why does this always come up almost every time I login to the clients wp-admin?

@databell96 We’re sorry to hear you are experiencing this issue. We understand that you have received a notification saying that ‘Because of a change in your Home URL setting, some of your SEO data needs to be reprocessed’. We know this can be alarming, so we’d be happy to clarify this for you.
The Yoast SEO plugin now detects any Home URL or permalink structure changes and since it’s a significant change, Yoast SEO needs to rerun the SEO data optimization. Sometimes you may not have changed anything related to the notice, but you are seeing the notification, and it’s confusing for you and we apologize for this.
If you use the Yoast Helper Tool does the issue resolve and that notification go away?
Please try the steps below:
-
i. Install & activate the Yoast Test Helper plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/yoast-test-helper/
ii. Go to Tools -> Yoast Test
iii. Locate the Yoast SEO section and select the “Reset indexables tables & migrations” button
iv. Click the “Optimize SEO Data” button in the Yoast SEO->Tools section. We look forward to your reply.
I went to Yoast SEO –> Tools but the Optimize SEO Data link isn’t clickable.
Hey @databell96,
Thank you for your reply and sorry for the confusion.
You’re correct that the “Optimize SEO Data” text is not a link, we should have said to click the button “Start SEO data optimization”. Can you please try to use the progress and see if can complete it after the reset you did? When completed, it shouldn’t pop up again.
It it fails, please check this help article with common errors with this process: https://yoast.com/help/we-couldnt-complete-the-optimization-of-your-seo-data/
That’s why I’m here in the first place. I did do that SEO optimization and then I’d login back in next time there was some plugin update (or whatever) and it would want me to do the Data Optimization all over again! Each and every time. And I didn’t change anything.
Hello @databell96
Thanks for the feedback. You mentioned that you successfully ran the SEO data optimization analysis, but you’re prompted whenever there’s a plugin update.
Since v15.1, the plugin detects changes to the home URL or permalink structure. You may not do this yourself, but plugin updates (not necessarily ours) could make such changes that you’re not aware of. Other changes could be switching from HTTP to HTTPS, pushing data from staging to live site, installing a new plugin, adding a new taxonomy or custom post type, a new theme feature, or another plugin modifying or interacting with the site’s URLs/permalinks; basically, actions that create new data that require optimization.
Also, you may choose not to re-run the analysis when prompted. If you do not click the button, it will eventually perform lazy indexing. The button is there if you want the SEO data optimization instantly.
No. This could just happen when logging, which usually is from some plugin update but not always. It could just be from logging in to add a new post or anything. And it’s only on a couple of sites I run. Not all if them.
You really need to look at these sites and answer the question, “why is this happening here?” instead of providing BS answers.
I recently migrated a site from HostPapa to SiteGround. Her site had the problem. After the migration, the problem went away. Why? I don’t know, but don’t you want to find out?
But before you think, it’s the hosting….. I have another client on SiteGround, same type of server, and he is having the problem! Why? Can’t be the hosting because it’s the same plan. So why?
Yes, we don’t assume it is due a hosting issue. Indeed, SEO Data Optimization button reappearing occasionally during plugin update in your particular case is something worth to look though it doesn’t actually impact in any SEO functionality and site rank.
That said, you might try resetting the indexable completely and rerunning the SEO Data Optimization in the Troubleshooting mode.
Step I – Install Yoast test helper and reset indexables.
If you use the Yoast Helper Tool does the issue resolve and that notification go away?
Please try the steps below:
1. Install & activate the?Yoast Test Helper plugin
2. Go to Tools > Yoast Test
3. Hit the “Reset indexables & migrations” button.
4. Go to SEO > Tools, and under SEO data, click the “SEO Data Optimization” button to allow Yoast to rescan your pages.Step II – Install the Health Check plugin and run optimization.
Often, we see problems occur in combination with another plugin or theme. The fastest way to rule out any conflict is to deactivate all non-Yoast plugins and switch to a standard theme like Twenty Twenty.
- Install and activate the?Health Check & Troubleshooting?plugin. It will deactivate all plugins and switch to a standard theme?like?Twenty Twenty. Switching to a troubleshooting mode does not affect normal visitors to your site.
- Activate only Yoast SEO plugin.
- Go to SEO > Tools and run the SEO Data Optimization.
- After the process completes and shows green check mark, disable the Troubleshooting mode from the admin bar.
- Clear all your caching from your theme, plugin, server, CDN like CloudFlare or browser.
- Check if the notification no longer displays.
We hope this helps.
So I followed the instructions on what to click on in the Test Helper, we t back to index the SEO data again and this time, it completely failed because about 1/3 of the way in, I got this error:
Oops, something has gone wrong and we couldn't complete the optimization of your SEO data. Please click the button again to re-start the process.
Hey @databell96,
Thank you so much for you reply and continued patience in getting this troubleshooted.
Was there any error message or more details when that error message was shown? We have a few most commonly seen issues with this here: https://yoast.com/help/we-couldnt-complete-the-optimization-of-your-seo-data/
Do you happen to run any security plugins or other solutions that limit the availability/functionality of the REST-API / admin-ajax on your site?
No. There’s no error or warning messages. Just a notification to run the SEO Data Optimization.
I am running WordFence, but I have a lot of sites that run both and this doesn’t happen on those. Only a handful of them.
@databell96 Thanks for your reply. This error sometimes occurs on sites where the previously optimized data is invalid or when there is a plugin or theme conflict, so we’d recommend to first reset the optimization to ensure previously optimized data has been cleared.
To reset the optimization data, please perform the following steps:
- Install & activate the Yoast Test Helper plugin
- Go to your WordPress admin dashboard > Tools (sidebar) > Yoast Test
- Locate the Yoast SEO section and click on the ‘Reset indexables tables & migrations’, ‘Reset Prominent words calculation’, and ‘Reset Internal link counter’ buttons. After each click, the page will reload to confirm that each reset was successful.
After removing any previously stored, next reattempt the data optimization. You can do this either with the ‘Start SEO data optimization’ function located in WordPress under Yoast SEO>Tools>Optimize SEO Data, or by using?WP-CLI commands. WP-CLI requires terminal access to your site, and is the recommended method if you have a large site.
If the SEO data optimization doesn’t complete after the reset, we’ll need to gather information from your browser to determine the next steps. Please open your browser’s console and check for any JavaScript errors. If you’re not familiar with your browser console, we have a guide that will help:?How to find JavaScript errors with your browser’s console
We have a list of known error codes?here?with recommended solutions. If the error is not listed or you have questions about the error, please provide us with a screenshot of the error.

If a new taxonomy has been added, can that trigger the “SEO Data Optimization” notice?
