    I’m testing my SureCart shop right now. I try to simulate a customer that purchases multiple times with the same email address, but moved to another city between the purchases. Then I use the same email address for every purchase, but other addresses. These different addresses are shown right at the order data. However at the customer data I just see the oldest address (of the first purchase). So it seems it does not get updated when another address is used with the same email address.

    Same happens for first name and last name. Only the names used for the first purchase are stored; different names used later (for example when there was a typo at the first purchase, or when a woman gets married and starts using her husbands name, or when a man becomes a woman (or vice versa) and starts using another name, etc etc.

    Hey Marc.

    Once the customer is set, we don’t update it on subsequent purchases. It will be updated on the order/checkout, but not on the customer dashboard. It would be unexpected if this were changing all the time. For example, if you are purchasing on behalf of your company, it would update your customer record with the company name, etc. unexpectedly.

    So, in short, this is only set the first time and then never updated through a purchase again. They can update it on the customer dashboard at any time.

    Hmm, not sure if I agree…
    And I didn’t mean it’s expected to change ‘all the time’. I meant it might change every now and then, when someone moves.

    Imagine, a customer buys something from me right now. Fills in address A. Then address A gets stored. All fine.

    In August he moves to another city: address B.

    Then in December he buys something again. Fills in address B. Then in the system at customer details there’s still address A.

    It think that’s quite confusing.

    Have you guys made a conscious decision in this?

    Hi Marc,

    Thanks for your reply. Yes, I understand where you are coming from. However, we are following eCommerce standards here. Shopify, WooCommerce and Stripe also function like this, for example.

    What we are trying to avoid is unexpected behavior. There are many scenarios where you are purchasing, but want to provide a different address or other information:

    • Purchasing a gift for someone.
    • Purchasing on behalf of a company.
    • Having multiple addresses (home, work, P.O. Box etc.)

    If the address were automatically updated, it could have serious unintended consequences. For example, if you have a subscription, we should not automatically update those as we do not know the reason for the address change. You may accidentally send your own items to your boss, friend, or the wrong address.

    This is why eCommerce platforms take a more explicit, declarative approach. If a customer were to move to another city, they would simply update their address in the customer dashboard.

    Please let me know if this makes sense.

    Hi Andre, thanks for explaining. And yes, this makes sense.

    However, if you’re following eCommerce standards, I would like to emphasize that by now it is quite common to have separate addresses filled by the customer: one for billing purposes and one for shipping purposes. Usually one can tick a checkmark to let know there’s another shipping address than the billing address.

    At least, in the webshops here in the Netherlands.

    Other than that I can live with your explanation, and I’ll keep it mind; it’s all fine, thanks! ??
