Wordpress sent me an email saying Contact Form 7 caused a fatal error on the site. I wasn’t able to assess my dashboard without using the link they sent for getting into recovery mode. I assessed the site and had to deactivate Contact Form 7.

    the error details are:
An error of type E_PARSE was caused in line 9 of the file /home/***REDACTED***/plugins/contact-form-7/admin/includes/welcome-panel.php. Error message: syntax error, unexpected ‘print’ (T_PRINT), expecting identifier (T_STRING)

When I tried to assess the site the error message I got said something about this line 9 was trying to print before it was called so it would always return a FALSE. You can’t print something that’s not there.

I hope this helps you to fix the issue, you have a great plugin there.
    Thanks

  • Yep, I just got the exact same error as above?

    Any update on this?

I had to sneak in safe mode and deactivate it but now it won’t let me activate the plugin.

    Thanks guys!

Ditto – crashed the backend and had to call support to find the problem. Plugin cannot be reactivated. Think it might be a problem with latest PHP version, but not certain.

Error details the same as OP’s.

I updated PHP to 7.4 and now no problems with Contact Forms 7, yeaaaa! I did have to update one other plugin though, make sure to backup before updating your PHP. Thanks Takayuki for the tip to update PHP.
