Contact Form 7 Orange "Failed to send your message." but WP-SMTP plugin works

I have been trying to get Contact Form 7 working for a couple weeks. So far I cannot get anything except
Failed to send your message. (with an orange border)
I have installed WP-SMTP plugin and it will successfully send e-mails in its test mode. It seems that Contact Form 7 is not using this plugin or the “Failed to send your message.” is indicating another ambiguous problem.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
