• Hi all,

I have nearly driven myself crazy with this one. I am using the “Twenty Seventeen” theme and it’s great. I chose “Contact Form 7” as it is supposed to be the best.

And yes, I do see the text above this form where it states, “Looking for help with a specific theme or plugin? Don’t post here – instead, head to the theme or plugin’s page and find the “View support forum” link to visit the theme or plugin’s individual forum.”

But I have searched and searched and searched in both of those forums and I am clueless. So I am starting here and will create new threads in each forum until I can find the help I need. Perhaps I may still find my answers that way but as of this moment this forum seems the most likely to provide assistance.

But this is not directly related to Contact Form 7 per say… I have some settings questions here too…just general WP stuff.

I have been working on my website in my spare time for months and am nearly finished. I thought I was done until I tested the Contact Form on the Contact page and it fails…no matter what email address I set it up with.

I host my site locally via a Bitnami stack in VirtualBox on a Windows 10 box. I have no issues accessing the site locally or externally. I think the issue lies in SMTP authentication but perhaps not.

Another thing to note, in the “Settings” area of the backend my “WordPress Address (URL) is set to the VM hosting the web server at 192.168.xxx.xxx and the same thing for “Site Address (URL)…it also shows the local VM ip where the site is hosted. Grayed out too… I know that the wp-config.php file is usually already configured if these are grayed out.

What is the significance of changing these fields as I understand you can lose access to your site if you change them to something invalid.

Additionally, the email address filed just below the URL fields is still set as [email protected] but each time I try to validate it the email never arrives so I hit cancel and leave it at [email protected].

So, I’m out of ideas… I’ve read forum posts, FAQ’s, configuration guides, etc.

    That’s why I’m here…lol, I don’t know.

I simply have no clue as to what to do to fix this. I know it being hosted locally and what not is causing the problem because everything else works fine.

I would be most grateful!!!! ??

    Thanks in advance!

See If You Have Email Problems – most people that work carefully through this list of email sending issues are able to solve their particular problems.

You are probably going to need to be skilled at Mail Server setup to get this working locally. CF7 sends emails via the normal WP/PHP email sending process. It’s very easy on most simple shared hosting accounts but to do it your own local install is going require considerable skill.

    Neil,

Thank you for your response and my apologies for getting back to so late.

So, this is what I have done… I decided that since I have spent so much time setting up my own VM to host my website that I would figure out this email issue as well. I will say, however, that it would be much easier to simply pay for a hosting plan and setup a WP site their. I may transfer my WP site to a shared host in the future but not right now.

Ok, so I setup WP Mail SMTP for my WP site (which was a MAJOR headache) but I finally got it. Then I made some changes to Contact Forms and to my surprise it worked! Then, it didn’t work, then it worked again, then it didn’t work, then…well, you get the point.

As of this very second WP Mail SMTP is fine and sends the test email with no issues. A customer sent me a request via the web form and I received an email from Google stating that it was not delivered (which I thought was odd). I checked my settings and tried it myself and it worked!!

But again, as of now, it is not working again for whatever reason. This on/off, on/off, yes/no, yes/no, 0/1, 0/1 is killing me here. If it is working fine the only reason it would cease to do so, IMHO, would be if my server’s IP changed (which it has not) or if the VM container crashed (which it has never done so).

So I am still working out the bugs regarding the contact form. It works and then it doesn’t… If you like feel free to go to my site’s Contact page and send me a test message via the form. It may succeed and it may fail. Point is, I have to figure this out otherwise I may have to migrate to shared hosting just so these things will work properly.

But I wanted to thank you for your advice and your suggestion(s). I am going to continue to work the issue and I will post any changes I make that result in a favorable outcome.

    Regards,

    David
