Contact form only sends when logged in

All worked well, but since a couple of days, the contactform on my site is only working when I am logged in.
When I am not logged in, I get this red-boxed error message:
An error occurred while trying to send your message. Try again later.
But as soon as I am logged in, the form works flawless….

After changing to theme 2020 and deactivating all plugings and changing everything back to normal, the form works again.
What remains is the red box error, which is discussed here:
also the email send conformation box is red (used to be green)
