• Hi there,

I have noticed yesterday, that I cannot make my group blocks full width anymore. While I was able to do this until two days ago and group blocks would be displayed full width like on this page, now I can only choose between “No” or “Wide Width (max 1000px).

There used to be a third option, being full width. I didn’t change any setting and I am using the same Site template as I did for all my other pages, but on none of them this third option is shown anymore.

Any help is much appreciated, thank you!

    Hi @rekenz – that’s definitely a little odd.

I haven’t been able to recreate that issue with a fresh install of WordPress and the Twenty Twenty-Two theme – so it’s possible it could be a conflict with a plugin on the site.

Could you please attempt to disable all plugins on the site? If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you can install plugins, install and activate “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/
It will add some additional features under the menu item under Tools > Site Health.
On its troubleshooting tab, you can Enable Troubleshooting Mode. This will disable all plugins, switch to a standard WordPress theme (if available), allow you to turn your plugins on and off and switch between themes, <strong>without affecting normal visitors to your site</strong>. This allows you to test for various compatibility issues.

There’s a more detailed description about how to use the Health Check plugin and its Troubleshooting Mode at https://make.www.ads-software.com/support/handbook/appendix/troubleshooting-using-the-health-check/

Hi @jordesign ! Thank you for your help. Unfortunately disabling/enabling the Plugins didn’t change anything. I have also deleted all plugins and themes that I am not using, that didn’t help either – do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you for trying this @rekenz. Could you check your “Inner blocks use content width” settings? This option can cause the width settings on the nested blocks to change.

Sorry for the late reply. Changing that setting doesn’t change anything about the “full width” setting, it doesn’t work either way.

    Hi @rekenz,

I am looking at the CSS classes on the container that cannot set as “full width” and I see these two classes:

    • is-layout-constrained
    • wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained

This leads me to think that the “Full Width” option is missing due to a setting in one of the parent blocks. Could you please re-check?

To clarify, this setting should be modified for the group block that holds the main content of the page, as seen below:

Hi again, I tried this (screenshot) but now the option to set the width on groups disappeared entirely. I cannot even choose between “no” and “wide width” anymore.

Just to make sure I am not misunderstanding, did you check the Layout Styles? There is a general setting there to set the default width of your site. Please check the video to see what I am referring to:

What I am referring to is the group block toolbar. It usually has the “wide width” “full width” option but it doesn’t show these for me anymore.

    What it usually looks like:

What it looks like for me:

Hey @rekenz ! In newer versions of the editor, it’s not possible to set an alignment or width for top-level blocks. In addition, the theme forces a padding on both sides if your top-level group(or similar) block has no background color set.

To do what you want, you can simply set a background color for your group block, and it will automatically become full-width. I’ve recorded a short video that shows this.

    (@rekenz)

@properlypurple Thanks for your input but this does not seem to work for me! If I set a background colour on my group block I will still have the white padding on the sides. See here: https://enihabap.myhostpoint.ch/foerdern/ Even on other pages, that I had set to full width before and I add a new group block with background colour as you describe (and the group seems to align with all others in the editor) it will appear with padding on the final page (see at the bottom of this page): https://enihabap.myhostpoint.ch/eegms/

It looks like that the method I shared, only works when editing a template. It doesn’t seem to work when editing a page/post, and your group blocks are inside a Content or Page Content block.

Can you try to manually add the classalignfull to your group block, under the Advanced section in the block settings? The screenshot below shows where this option is.

    (@rekenz)

@properlypurple This worked, thank you so much!

    @rekenz

I found this thread having run into the same problem. thanks @properlypurple, adding classes alignfull and alignwide works.

but I found out that some themes will purposefully REMOVE default features like alignment so they can lock it behind their paid premium version. The theme I tried, Raft, does this. Look at my screen recording: I refresh the page and the content is full width and has the alignment options. Then after a few seconds (probably after theme scripts get loaded) boom they disappear. Just avoid these scummy FSEs. Raft is made by Themeisle.

On refresh, the block goes full screen as intended. but after a few seconds (probably when the script loads) it removes the ability to set the alignment.

some themes will purposefully REMOVE default features like alignment so they can lock it behind their paid premium version.

Could you share a new screen recording but also include the view list on the left and the block settings on the right, to get a better picture? I would like to try and reproduce and confirm this.

    Thank you @namkevi

I was having the same trouble. I seem to have fixed it by editing the Pages template. I toggled inner blocks use content width ON. I set CONTENT to 100%. Then, in my pages I now had the three options for None, middle width, full width in my top level groups and column blocks.
