I’ve been using this plugin to test out the upcoming 3.6 branch of WordPress so I’ve set it up to stay on the bleeding edge nightlies. However, after I update WordPress, if I go back to the Updates page, it will say that there is yet another upgrade available to WordPress. Even after I install it, the version numbers stay the same e.g. 3.6-beta3-24375 upgrade and I see 3.6-beta3-24375.

If I wait a day or few days, the numbers do change but it seems like there is always an update for WordPress even if there really isn’t one. I’ve caught myself performing 2,3 upgrades just because the prompt tells me a new version is available.

  • That is expected behavior, not an issue.

Nightly builds are made available every day at 2300 GMT, so updating first thing in the morning would get you the latest bleeding edge version.

Hmm I might not have explained the exact issue clearly in the first post. For example, I just checked the Updates portion of the back-end and it told me a new version of WordPress was available. So, I upgraded. I immediately went back to the updates page, the notice that an upgrade was available was still there so I upgraded again. Went back to the updates page and the notice is still there. All the while, the actual version numbers don’t change. I can keep upgrading WordPress continuously without seeing the notice disappear.

Interesting. I do see the same thing. I had not been going back to check the updates page in my beta site after updating before, so I don’t know whether it’s a new issue with this particular release. I am not going to worry about it, as I’m sure there will be another one tomorrow.

You explained it perfectly, and my original response stands.

This is how it works – the notice won’t disappear, regardless of how many times you upgrade to the latest bleeding edge version.

Yes, the plugin does work as intended as in pulling down a newer nightly version but it’s difficult to know when that new version is available because of the Upgrade notice that is constantly showing up whether there is an upgrade or not.

You are wanting a notification similar to what we get when a new stable version of WordPress is released, and the plugin does not provide that.

Perhaps you or someone else could code that up and submit it as a patch to Westi? I know he would welcome patches. ??

@jeffr0 you are describing as a bug exactly how the plugin is meant to work at the moment as Kim mentions.

In general it would be nice for the plugin to know the version of the current nightly build – but it can’t because we don’t have an API that exposes that and it’s not high priority for us to add one because the plugin works and I want you to upgrade all the time ??

Ok. My apologies then. It’s sure been confusing to me as I thought I would get one nightly build and then WordPress would notify me again of when the next nightly build would be available.

As long as the site doesn’t break, I’ll try and go for the record of most upgrades in an hour.
