Control number of words (characters) displayed using "posts" shortcode

Hi, first of all, thank you for creating such a great plug-in!

I’d like to use the “Posts” shortcode to display a selection of blog posts on the homepage, and wanted to see if I can manually control the number of words that show up as excerpt.

Any advice would help for I’m fairly new in using the WordPress CMS.
